The above images were provided by NASA as the first ever obtained from the spacecraft Messenger in orbit about the solar system’s innermost planet, Mercury. The images were captured this week. The dominant rayed crater in the upper portion of the image at left is called Debussy. The bottom portion of this image is near Mercury’s south pole. At right is another never-before-imaged area of Mercury’s surface, and was taken from an altitude of about 450 km above the planet. In the coming year, Messenger will attempt to unravel the history and evolution of the solar system’s innermost planet.
