The future looks musical at Red Deer College, with some of the college’s most talented students picking up support to help them develop their art.

The best of Red Deer College’s music students showed their many skills during the recent Music Performance Scholarship Competition.

After a pre-competition screening, 14 finalists were selected to vie for $5,000 in scholarships. First-place winners received $750 while second netted $250.

Musicians were chosen for voice, instrumental, guitar, piano and composition, with a few competing in two categories.

A panel of five adjudicators had its work cut out in making the choices.

The winners were:

• Instrumental — marimbist Taylor Harmgardt first, flautist Krysta Andreeff second

• Voice — tenor Spenser Pasman first, soprano Anda Simard second

• Guitar — Taylor McPhail first, Jesse Mykietiak second

• Piano — Dean Thiessen first, Stephanie Taralson second

• Composition — Guitarist Taylor McPhail first, guitarist Dillon Smiley second
