VANCOUVER — Canadian yoga retailer Lululemon Athletica is voluntarily withdrawing certain reusable bags from its stores over concern they may contain lead.
Lululemon (TSX: LLL) says there is no concern with the use of the bag, only a potential concern with its proper disposal after use.
It says the recall of the bags, known as shoppers, follows recent discussions among other retailers over the proper disposal of reusable bags.
The shoppers are distributed free of charge to the customers with their purchases.
Luluemon CEO Christine Day says all available research indicates these bags “comply with all applicable health and safety regulations and are safe for our guests’ use.”
Day says the bags at issue were obtained from a new supplier, that she did not name, and have only been distributed in stores within the last year.
“We choose our partners carefully and the manufacturer of the shoppers is known for its green practices, and is co-operating fully with our review,” Day said in a news release.
“While we conduct that review, we believe that from a long-term environmental perspective it is better to stop distributing these bags. Our guests will be provided with shoppers from other manufacturers that do not raise potential environmental concerns.” The discontinued bags were distributed between Nov. 1, 2009 and Dec. 18, 2010.
The distributed bags in Canada were:
l Ambassador Shopper — Small (English and French)
l Ambassador Shopper — Large (English and French)
l ivivva athletica shopper
The distributed bags in the U.S. were:
l Red Manifesto Shopper – Small
l Red Manifesto Shopper – Large
The bags distributed online were:
l E-commerce Shopper – Small
l E-commerce Shopper — Large
Any customers who received one of the bags can return them for a replacement or appropriate disposal at any of the retailer’s stores.
For those who made an online purchase and received a discontinued bag, they are asked to call Lululemon’s Guest Education Centre at 1-877-263-9300 ext. 2 for a shipping label to return the bag by posted mail. A list of all affected shoppers and more information will be provided at www.lululemon.com/shoppers
