Mr. MONOPOLY poses on a life-sized game board at the unveiling of the Canadian cities that were voted onto the new MONOPOLY: Canada Edition.

TORONTO — You can still pass Go and collect your money, but you’ll never land on Boardwalk in the new Canadian version of Monopoly, being released just in time for Canada Day.

Votes from across the country were tallied to determine the squares in the new game, giving patriotic players the chance to land on 22 Canadian cities.

The highest real estate squares, the dark blue normally occupied by Boardwalk and Park Place, go to Chatham-Kent in Ontario and Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu in Quebec.

The green squares go to Calgary, Sarnia, Ont., and Edmonton, while Windsor, Ont., Quebec City and Trois-Rivieres, Que., occupy the yellow, and Medicine Hat, and Gatineau and Shawinigan in Quebec are painted red.

Kawartha Lakes, Ont., Chilliwack, B.C., and Montreal are orange, and magenta squares are allocated to Kelowna, B.C., North Bay, Ont., and St. John’s, N.L.

Light blue squares go to Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, while Beauceville, Que., and Banff, will have to settle for brown.

The game company Hasbro says votes were cast during a six-week period earlier this year to determine 20 of the cities from a pool of cities pre-selected based on population.

The other two spots were reserved for a wild-card vote, and went to Banff and Beauceville.

The popular board game has gone through a number of incarnations since being invented by Charles Darrow in 1935.

For instance, Electronic Arts has created digital versions that are available for download for mobile phones. And this new Canadian edition features an electronic banking unit with cards instead of cash, allowing players to collect rent and buy their squares with the touch of a button, Hasbro said in a release.

More than 275 million copies of Monopoly have been sold in 11 countries and 43 languages. There are more than 200 different editions.

The new Canadian edition will be available in stores in French and English on June 28, Hasbro said.
