The rivalry between Lacome and Ponoka for bragging rights of their volunteer fire departments really only has one winner — the towns’ respective Food Banks.

The Lacombe and Ponoka fire departments recently faced off in a series of home-and-home hockey games to benefit the food banks in their respective communities.

While the Lacombe crew took home bragging rights on the ice, beating their Ponoka counterparts 13-4 in Lacombe and 11-9 in Ponoka, the food banks scored best: Ponoka’s garnered 135 kg of food and $250 in cash while Lacombe’s walked away with 72 kg of food and $124 in cash.

Work is already underway for the fire departments to compete against each other again this summer in a slow pitch challenge.
