OTTAWA — Health Canada says a weight loss product is being voluntarily recalled due to the risk of serious and potentially fatal adverse effects from its combination of ingredients.

Synerate, used for weight loss or body building, has caffeine and synephrine, which is similar to ephedrine.

Health Canada says there have been reports of adverse events when synephrine and/or ephedrine are used in combination with caffeine and other stimulants.

These incidents range from dizziness, tremors, headaches and irregularities in heart rate to seizures, psychosis, heart attacks and stroke.

The product is manufactured for Strive and distributed by Upper 49th, and is not authorized by Health Canada. Synerate products were distributed by Upper 49th to retail stores earlier last year. The product may also have been distributed as part of a kit with T-shirts as well as product samples.

Health Canada says it will monitor the distributor’s voluntary recall, and says individuals should consult health-care practitioners with any questions or concerns related to the product.
