Grocery manager Ryan Belanger holds some of the selection of Keurig single serving coffees at Blackfalds Family Foods Thursday.

A year ago, Blackfalds Family Foods had a modest selection of Keurig coffee flavours — four to be exact.

Today, the count exceeds 220 and requires about 60 metres of shelf space. Cinnamon roll, chocolate glazed donut, caramel apple pie, pecan praline, ginger bread and pumpkin are among the beverage options for owners of the single-cup brewing machines, said store owner Rich Knebel.

“Pretty much anything you can imagine.”

Keurig Inc. has confirmed that Blackfalds Family Foods carries more of its products than any other retailer in Canada. The selection is attracting Keurig enthusiasts in growing numbers.

“People have literally been driving from Calgary, Edmonton, Stettler, Lacombe,” said Knebel.

“When they come in, they’re not buying one or two boxes. They’re buying 10, 15, 20 different types.”

The decision to make his store a Keurig mecca came after Knebel noted a trend late last year.

“At least 10 of my friends had gotten Keurig machines for Christmas. I thought there’s got to be something going on with this coffee.”

He resolved to boost Blackfalds Family Foods’ stake in the market big time — a move that his father and business partner Gerry was less than enthused about.

“I put the initial $1,500 order, which was 80 varieties, on my personal credit card and said, ‘No worries. If it doesn’t sell, don’t pay me back.’

“Three days later, we were placing another order.”

The store now also sells Keurig machines and other accessories. It’s even set up a brewing station, where customers can make and enjoy a drink of their choosing.

Knebel said the prices Blackfalds Family Foods charges for Keurig coffee and equipment are the lowest in Central Alberta, and buyers are able to mix and match flavours.

Chai lattes, mochachinos, hot chocolates and apple cider are among the biggest sellers.

The consumer traffic generated by Blackfalds Family Foods’ vast Keurig section has benefitted the entire store, said Knebel.

“They’re coming in and checking out the flyer, and checking out the store for the first time.”

First Choice Family Foods in Penhold, which Knebel and his father also own, has about 40 varieties of Keurig coffee — a number kept low by space restrictions.

Knebel continues to work to diversify his stores’ Keurig selection. Some flavours are produced on a limited edition basis, so this requires some effort.

“I’ve been ordering from the States, from Mexico, from Europe, kind of all over. It’s time-consuming but it’s fun, because people appreciate it.”
