A building permit for the first phase of a continuing care facility in Clearview Ridge gave Red Deer’s Inspections and Licensing Department a $17.4-million boost last month.

A building permit for the first phase of a continuing care facility in Clearview Ridge gave Red Deer’s Inspections and Licensing Department a $17.4-million boost last month.

The city issued building permits for work valued at $33.3 million in May, with residential approvals accounting for $26.6 million of this total. The residential permits included one for Covenant Health’s 100-bed assisted living facility at 10 Carrington Dr.

An anticipated second phase to the project would add another 44 units.

Building permits for commercial work added $4.2 million to the May tally, with industrial approvals accounting for $2 million and public projects $415,000.

The total for May is more than triple the value of construction approvals issued during the same month in 2011. The $9.9-million figure from last year included $6.9 million in the residential category, $2.2 million for industrial work and $920,000 for commercial projects.

So far this year, Red Deer has issued building permits for $106.1 million worth of work. That’s up from $55.4 million for the same period last year.

At $62.4 million, the value of residential permits to the end of May is more than double the $30 million for the first five months of 2011.

In addition to the assisted living facility, other big permits approved last month included one for $2 million for a new Shopper’s Drug Mart at Clearview Market Square, and another for more than $1 million in expansion and renovation work at the Red Deer water treatment plant.
