Food forum to tackle distribution

The challenge for many food producers is not growing or raising a product, or even finding a buyer.

The challenge for many food producers is not growing or raising a product, or even finding a buyer.

It’s connecting the two.

“For them to move products from their farms or small processing facilities into the market — whether it be to a chef, to a restaurant, to food services, to retail — they’re usually moving smaller units, and that can be difficult for them,” said Kathy Bosse, a new venture specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development in Red Deer.

Transporting smaller volumes of food can be expensive, especially for producers and processors away from major transportation routes, said Bosse. Often, the operators themselves assume responsibility for this task, which consumes their time and resources.

“It’s been an issue for a number of years, and producers and processors have brought it to our attention.”

Alberta Agriculture responded by organizing a producer focus group last spring to discuss the issue, and followed up with interviews of trucking and storage companies, and food buyers. Now it’s bringing a broader group together to brainstorm and share ideas at a Jan. 24 food distribution forum in Red Deer.

Producers, processors, transporters, chefs, retailers and anyone else involved in the distribution of food is invited to attend the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on 67th Street. Speaking will be Paul Knechtel, president and co-founder of 100 Mile Markets Ontario Inc.

Bosse is optimistic ideas to address the food distribution dilemma will result. Some producers and processors have already taken action, she said.

“Innisfail Growers have been working together for many years, and they market and do some distribution (as a group).

“If nothing else,” she added, “this may provide people with the opportunity to understand better each other’s needs, and come together and make some connections.”
