Hudsons Pub coming to downtown Red Deer

A new pub and outdoor patio is planned for one of Red Deer’s most visible downtown locations. Hudsons Canada’s Pub will be located on the main level of the 12-storey Executive Place building at 4900 50th St. The City of Red Deer’s Municipal Planning Commission approved the development permit on Wednesday. Hudsons now needs to apply for building permits.

Hudsons Canada’s Pub will be located on the main level of the 12-storey Executive Place building at 4900 50th St.

The City of Red Deer’s Municipal Planning Commission approved the development permit on Wednesday. Hudsons now needs to apply for building permits.

A spokesman for the company preferred to comment on details when all the permits are acquired.

Hudsons has a number of pub locations in Western Canada, including five in Edmonton, two in Calgary, and one each in Lethbridge and Saskatoon.

The Red Deer location will be almost 5,457 square feet, with the patio about 500 square feet, to be located along 49th Avenue. Access to the pub will be from Ross Street.

While there is another drinking establishment nearby (The Olive), the MPC analysis states: “Hudsons would be a welcome addition to the downtown, providing increased activity within the area with the proposed patio and large, unobstructed windows. There will be additional lighting at the exterior.”

The pub will have an occupancy load of 234 people. It will have an inhouse DJ, with additional live entertainment on special occasions.

The new watering hole is expected to open in mid-December or January.

It complies with both the Municipal Development Plan and the Greater Downtown Action Plan.

There are two conditions attached to the permit — a construction fire safety plan must be submitted, and that there be no successful appeal against the decision.

No one opposed the permit during the MPC meeting.
