But Tiffany Bourré, external communications manager with HBC, said Zellers customers are not obligated to utilize the pharmacy at Save-On-Foods.

“A customer at any time can choose to transfer their prescription files to any pharmacy they want,” Bourré said.

Patient files and prescription records will be available at Save-On-Foods Pharmacy, at 6720 52nd Ave., on Saturday if they want to switch to another pharmacy.

Instead of going to Save-On-Foods, people could contact their pharmacy of choice and request that pharmacy have their files transferred, she said.

Zellers sold a number of its pharmacies, including patient files, to other businesses with the upcoming closure of the majority of Zellers locations.

The transfer of files to Save-On-Foods in north Red Deer allows for continuity of care, she said.

“It’s a legal obligation because there should be no disruption to service or medication people have come to rely on,” Bourré said.

American discount department store chain Target confirmed it plans to open a store in the Zellers premises at Bower Place Shopping Centre in the spring of 2013.
