Doors are opening for singer/songwriter

First Lundell won a $10,000 Telus Optik grant to make a new music video for his original rock song Everything. Now the video was selected best in Alberta in a Telus Storyhive competition.

Lundell’s prize is an artistic residency at the Banff Centre, which allows for plenty of networking and mentoring opportunities.

The video, which can be seen at www.storyhive.com/music-videos/edition/id/2016-music-sh6, is about a heart-broken girl who discovers what she has to offer during a life-changing hitchhiking trip.

An all-night filming session took place in Vermilion and Islay, as well as the rural countryside.

Red Deer musicians — bassist (and Sam’s brother) Dallas Lundell, guitarist Luke Mattheis, and drummers Dave Grobe and Mark Stetson — took part in the video and studio recordings financed through the Telus Optik TV Storyhive grant.

The 19-year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist was one of 17 Alberta and B.C. artists who receive funding to create more Western Canadian content. Lundell teamed up with Edmonton filmmaker Justin Brunelle of Moving Artistry Productions and cinematographer David Baron to create the “thought-provoking and inspirational video that chronicles a young woman’s journey of self-reflection.”

Lundell was born in Red Deer, but lives in Lloydminster, where he was raised. Since his older siblings reside in Red Deer, he often returns to play at CrossRoads Church, where his brother is a pastor.

“It feels like home …. I’m lucky to have roots in two places,” said Lundell, who’s grateful to Telus Optik, his band and filmmaking team, as well all the supporters who voted for his video in the online contest. (His win was determined by a jury and an audience vote.)

Everything was inspired by the question: What are the things we value about ourselves? Lundell said, “It’s become my goal in songwriting to get people thinking …”
