The universal tale of Tevye the milkman and his three marriage-able daughters is about to cross religious lines.

The musical Fiddler on the Roof is being staged this week as a fundraiser by the Koinonia Christian School in Red Deer.

The heartfelt musical, based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, sets Tevye’s family dilemmas against the wider problem of Jewish persecution in Russia a century ago.

The local production that runs May 8, 10, 11, and 12 at the Deer Park Alliance Church, 2960-39th St., has a cast of 39 actors, ranging from six to 60 years of age.

The musical was created by Joseph Stein, Jerry Brock, and Sheldon Harnick, and was produced for the New York stage by Harold Prince.

The Koinonia shows are at 7 p.m. on May 8 and 10 and at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on May 11 and 12. Tickets are $15 by calling 403-346-1839.
