Royals perform at Centrium

The gold-medal-winning Red Deer Royals will be among six Western Canadian marching showbands performing on Saturday, May 5, in Red Deer.The 18th annual Marching Showband Classic (formerly Festival of Champions) will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Centrium.

The Red Deer Royals Show Band performs its field show Scheherazade with music by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and based on the Arabian Nights tale at Great Chief Park Wednesday night. The 92 12-20-year-olds will perform the show at the World Championship for Marching Show Bands Saturday in Calgary after marching in the Calgary Stampede parade Friday. Once its Calgary shows are complete - with perhaps a berth in the championship finals Tuesday - the band returns to Central Alberta for a host of performances and parades. A presentation was also made Wednesday to outgoing director Rob Goring.

The 18th annual Marching Showband Classic (formerly Festival of Champions) will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Centrium.

Each acclaimed band will perform a choreographed field show. The Red Deer Royals will debut their 2013 show, called New Moon in the Old Moon’s Arms.

Everyone is welcome to attend this fun, family event, which includes a raffle and silent auction, as well as performances by talented musicians and colour guard.

Admission is $5 a person (children age six and under are free) at the door.
