There is still time for Red Deerians to apply for the five vacancies for community members on the new Municipal Policing Committee.

Two new positions on the Audit Committee, and one vacancy on the River Bend Golf & Recreation Society, also need to be filled by community members.

The deadline to apply for the committees is 4:30 p.m. on April 25.

Recent changes to the province's Police Act require all communities with a population over 15,000 that are policed by the RCMP to have a policing committee.

The policing committee, which will include two councillors, will oversee the municipal police service agreement, represent the interests of the public and council to the detachment commander, help develop a yearly priority and strategy plan, help develop a community safety plan, and assist in selecting the officer in charge of the detachment.

The city is looking for one Indigenous citizen, and a newcomer to Canada or be from a marginalized population, with experience in leadership and dedication to public safety.

Alberta's public safety minister reserves the right to appoint up to three of the members.

City clerk Jessica Robinson said policing committee applicants would also have to pass a background check administered through the province, and council's nomination committee will hold interviews.

Robinson encouraged Red Deerians interested in being part of the committees with spots to fill to apply.

"You don't know until you try," Robinson said.

"I also encourage community members to reach out if they wanted to have a conversation to better understand what it might look like to serve."

She said there are usually more committee positions to fill during the fall recruitment campaign, so citizens should keep their eyes open if their interests don't align with the committees currently seeking members.

The Audit Committee, which oversees the city's financial reporting, risk management and internal control processes, is specifically looking for applicants with financial expertise.

The River Bend Golf & Recreation Society Board oversees operations of the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, including policy development, capital expenditure management, and operating budgeting and control. Those applying for the vacant position should be active golfers or River Bend recreation users, with financial or business experience.

The 10-member board includes one councillor and nine community members.
