Accused in body case gets lawyer

A lawyer has been found for the Red Deer man accused of killing a Calgary woman and leaving her remains in a trash bin.

A lawyer has been found for the Red Deer man accused of killing a Calgary woman and leaving her remains in a trash bin.

Nathan Desharnais was arrested on Sept. 14, charged with second-degree murder and interfering with human remains in relation to the discovery of a body in Red Deer on Feb. 22.

The body of Talia Meguinis, 27, was found as a recycling truck was emptying its load at a depot in the Riverside light industrial park.

Desharnais made his third appearance in Red Deer provincial court on Wednesday, by closed-circuit TV from the Red Deer Remand Centre.

Duty counsel Mark Gottlieb advised that the Legal Aid Society has appointed Edmonton lawyer Arnold Piragoff to represent him.

However, Piragoff was not able to attend court on Wednesday because he is still recovering from a medical procedure.

Noting that Piragoff has only recently received the file and will need some time to review the Crown’s case against Desharnais, Gottlieb asked that issues of release, entering a plea and setting hearing dates be postponed until early December.

Desharnais remains in custody pending his next court appearance, set for Dec. 5.
