Action for Prosperity will host its second community forum next week to take action on poverty in Central Alberta.

The forum is free to attend and will be held at the Red Deer Resort and Casino from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Action for Prosperity is an initiative of the Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance and the United Way Central Alberta — funding has been provided by Red Deer and District Family and Community Support Services.

"We know that issues like affordability, unemployment, and exclusion don’t have easy answers. But we also know that if we act together, we can make an impact and help more of our neighbours to thrive," said a media release.

"We recognize that no single organization can tackle the roots of poverty and inequality. Most of our service systems are not set up to deal with these big, complex issues. We also know, though, that when those who are struggling can live up to their potential, our whole community is stronger."

The forum will include dinner and a facilitated discussion to share feedback, ideas and connections that can help to advance Action for Prosperity’s future initiatives and actions.

Over the past several months, Action for Prosperity’s cabinet has been planning initiatives to take action based on what was heard at the first community forum in May.

"The initiatives have been designed to reach those who are working hard, but may have difficulty making ends meet, and engage local businesses to play a part in making Central Alberta a more equitable place to live and work."

The 2019 Poverty in Red Deer report highlights the following identified needs:

— Community leadership on poverty reduction that encourages and inspires change

— Earlier support, and more support, to meet basic needs

— Fewer restrictions for those needing support

— Intercept points for people during life transitions (when a decline into poverty is more likely to occur)

— Neighbourhood or place-based community development

— Opportunities for those experiencing poverty to connect (i.e. bridging social capital) with those experiencing greater prosperity

— Affordable housing

— Affordable childcare

— Education and literacy opportunities

— A focus on the most vulnerable – Children are more likely to live in low income households than any other age range in Red Deer

People can register for the community forum on www.eventbrite.com. If people are experiencing technical difficulties, they can also register by contacting Ashley Brosda at abrosda@kpmg.ca.
