Angels on wheels help seniors

A new program recognizing the angelic efforts of residents who help senior citizens with their transportation needs has been launched in Red Deer.

A new program recognizing the angelic efforts of residents who help senior citizens with their transportation needs has been launched in Red Deer.

The City of Red Deer, Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre and Alberta Motor Association have teamed up to offer the Driving Angel program that salutes citizens who drive seniors around the city.

“It’s been recognized that, for seniors particularly, transportation is a big issue,” said Andrew Dale, executive director of the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre.

“One, for mobility but also for their wellness as well, to get them out of their houses so that they’re able to continue on with their normal day to day activities and to get out and socialize.

“It’s a very integral part of the whole wellness for the senior.”

The program started on Monday as two Red Deerians were acknowledged by Mayor Morris Flewwelling for their efforts to assist seniors no longer able to drive. Recipients Joan Holdstock and Vi Bennett have been volunteering at the Golden Circle for five and three years respectively, and have driven seniors to the centre every week as well as to medical appointments.

The women were nominated by Hazel McGraw and Amanda Wium, two seniors who they provide rides to and have formed friendships with.

Dale noted the program doesn’t exclusively recognize volunteers — such as a neighbour, friend or family member — but bus and taxi drivers as well.

Anyone who helps take a senior to medical appointments, essential services, or social and recreational activities can be nominated, he said.

Seniors can nominate anyone who has provided transportation for them by registering their Driving Angel. Nomination forms are available at the Golden Circle or by visiting the www.goldencircle.ca/drivingangel.htm

Once the name has been registered, the nominator can present their driver with a Driving Angel pin and certificate.

The AMA has previously initiated this program in Edmonton and Cochrane.
