A Red Deer man accused of assaulting and slashing a woman with a knife in her apartment faces several charges following an incident early Sunday morning.

Red Deer City RCMP responded to several complaints of a disturbance at an apartment in a building on the 5800 block of 57th Avenue in Red Deer around 3:55 a.m. on Sunday.

Police arrived to find a 30-year-old woman who was allegedly assaulted and slashed with a knife.

Police allege the suspect, who is known to the victim, was at her apartment for a social visit. They say the two started to argue and the suspect assaulted the victim by punching and kicking her repeatedly in the face, head and chest. The suspect then allegedly used a knife to slash her several times. The victim managed to lock herself in the bathroom, and the suspect left the apartment after damaging property inside the apartment and in the hallway, police say.

Police located a suspect outside the building and he was taken into custody.

The victim was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre by Red Deer Emergency Services and she was treated for multiple lacerations and bruises.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the incident.

John Profeit, 34, of Red Deer was charged with one count of aggravated assault; one count of assault with a weapon and one count of mischief. Profeit was remanded in custody to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Friday.
