The Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a report of an attempted vehicle theft at the McDonald’s parking lot at 12:38 p.m. on Jan. 26.

Due to the attempted theft 37-year-old Sylvan Lake resident Rustin Goettsch has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft under $5,000, and failure to comply with a breath demand.

The incident started after the vehicle owner had left the vehicle with their 12-year-old inside to pick up some food.

After the victim left the vehicle, Goettsch entered it and began to pull out of the parking spot when they were confronted by the 12-year-old still inside.

After the confrontation, Goettsch then parked the vehicle and left.

Officers arriving on the scene were approached by Goettsch who displayed signs of impairment and told police that his vehicle had run out of gas.

When checking the vehicle Goettsch came from, it was revealed to be a vehicle reported stolen on Jan. 26.

Goettsch was arrested promptly on the scene.

Some crimes are easier to solve than others, Sylvan Lake RCMP Cpl. Sean Sexsmith said.

“In this case, we are thankful that this potentially dangerous situation was mitigated without injury to the 12-year-old.”

Goettsch has been released from custody after being taken before a justice of the peace, with his next court date set for Feb. 9, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
