Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour coming to Red Deer

Screenings set from Jan. 8-10 at Memorial Centre

Red Deer will be a stop on the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour this week.

A number of films will be screened at the Memorial Centre at 7 p.m. from Wednesday, Jan. 8 to Friday, Jan. 10.

Every year, the Film Festival World Tour team licenses about 30 documentary films featuring a range of styles and themes, including climbing, skiing, kayaking, biking, adventure, culture and the environment. When making this selection many factors are considered, including comments made by the pre-screening committee, audience reaction to the films shown in Banff, and feedback received from the tour audience.

Local host organizers work with the team to bring screenings to various locations around the world. The Kerry Wood Nature Centre is serving as the local organizer for the Red Deer screenings.

"Kerry Wood Nature Centre has been screening Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival films as a fundraiser for nearly 30 years," said Alice Koning, Kerry Wood Nature Centre's community outreach co-ordinator.

"It is one of our single biggest fundraisers we do every year. It's a huge boon to our annual budget, which allows us to provide free and low-cost environmental programming to people of all ages and all walks of life, whether that's school groups, community groups or members of the general public who walk through our doors each day. We really try hard to make sure our programming stays accessible and affordable."

Between 1,000 and 1,500 people have typically come out to the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour screenings in Red Deer each year, Koning noted.

"Each night, for a little over two hours, worth of films being shown," Koning said.

"The films are different each night. You're always getting a mixture of things that are related to mountains. ... It's well worth the time for anybody who's interested in mountains or these various outdoor sports, whether that's just for one night or all three nights."

A full list of the films being shown on the world tour can be found at www.banffcentre.ca/banffmountainfestival/tour. The films listed on the website will not be shown at every stop on the world tour, as the selections vary by location.
