An inmate who scaled fences at Bowden Institution and escaped more than two weeks ago has been recaptured.

Shawn Thomas Evjen, 46, was nabbed by Edmonton police during a traffic stop at 178th Street and 87th Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. Evjen admitted he was the escaped prisoner and was taken into custody.

Evjen, of Rocky Mountain House, escaped from the medium security prison about 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 14 by climbing the perimeter fence. The 46-year-old was considered armed and dangerous and RCMP warned the public not to approach him.

An RCMP dog unit and helicopter were called in to search for Evjen but he managed to get away.

Evjen was serving a 24-and-a-half-year sentence for armed robbery, assaulting a peace officer, wearing a disguise while committing an offence and possession of a weapon.

He was sentenced in 1985 and released in February of this year. Within months he was back behind bars after committing another robbery in Red Deer. He had yet to be sentenced on that conviction.

The escape attempt will mean additional charges for Evjen.
