Bowden Institution stabbing suspect makes court appearance

A Bowden Institution inmate charged in the stabbing death of another inmate made a brief appearance in court on Wednesday.

A Bowden Institution inmate charged in the stabbing death of another inmate made a brief appearance in court on Wednesday.

Keith Clinton Sandmaier, 34, faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of David Tung Louie, 38, on June 19. Sandmaier appeared in court from the Red Deer Remand Centre through closed-circuit television.

Crown prosecutor Murray McPherson said a complication with computer evidence warranted an adjournment in the case. A computer hard drive provided to Crown prosecutors in late September was found last week to contain some personal information that required further review before the evidence can be disclosed to the defence. The hard drive is in the “vetting stage,” he said.

Provincial court Judge Jim Hunter agreed to adjourn the case until Nov. 30.

Sandmaier remains in custody.

Louie was found suffering from stab wounds about 10:45 p.m. on June 19. He was taken to Innisfail hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Louie was serving a 12-year sentence handed down in 2003 for charges related to weapons, drugs and robbery. He was due for statutory release in 2013 and would have completed his sentence in 2015.
