A Calgary man has been remanded in custody to face numerous charges related to a high-speed police chase early Tuesday morning near Sylvan Lake.

Jeffrey Todd Sharratt, 24, has been charged with 11 offences, including assaulting a peace officer, theft of a vehicle, impaired driving, uttering threats and dangerous driving.

Sylvan Lake RCMP became involved in a high-speed chase after a routine traffic stop in Sylvan Lake at 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The driver of a Pontiac Sunfire was being detained for an impaired driving investigation when a passenger climbed into the driver seat and fled from the scene. A spike belt was deployed and the vehicle was eventually brought to a halt near RR42 west of Eckville. The vehicle suffered heavy front-end damage as a result of driving with deflated tires for a lengthy period, police say.

Other charges facing Sharratt include failing to provide a breath sample, dangerous driving, disqualified driving, obstruction, uttering threats towards a peace officer, and resisting arrest.

Sharratt will appear in Red Deer provincial court on Friday for a bail hearing.
