Care worker free on bail

A Red Deer care worker and local artist accused of sexually assaulting a severely disabled man has been released on bail.

A Red Deer care worker and local artist accused of sexually assaulting a severely disabled man has been released on bail.

Leo Ducharme, 57, of Red Deer has been charged with one count of sexual assault.

It is alleged that the mother of a severely disabled man came home to find the care worker sexually assaulting her 29-year-old son at about 10 a.m. on Monday morning in Red Deer.

Provincial Court Judge Gordon Deck set bail at $1,000. Ducharme was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim and stay five blocks from the man’s house.

He can’t possess a computer and must stay away from any people with disabilities or those under 18 without an adult or guardian present. He must also stay 100 metres away from a school, playground, swimming pool or any other place where children are typically present.

The name of the alleged victim and any evidence presented at the bail hearing on Tuesday afternoon are protected by a court-ordered publication ban.

Ducharme was interested in exploring Christian themes in his art, which were on show this month at a local art gallery. The art was billed as an expression of his faith and spiritual journey.

Ducharme is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 1.
