Central Alberta Theatre will bring a new stage comedy with a nostalgic look to Red Deer starting this weekend.
Pouf!, written by Lou Clyde, will run in the Studio Theatre at the Red Deer Memorial Centre from Feb. 7-9 and 13-16.
The situational comedy is set in 1958 and follows Betty, a frustrated housewife who transforms her living room into a salon. Betty uses her talent for "poufing" to change the lives of women living in the neighbourhood.
The cast includes Gillian Corsiatto as Betty, Alyssa Latimer as Mary, Debby Allan as Teresa, Suzanne Hermary as Margo, Bryan Mildenberger as John and David Ellis as Ray.
Directed by Glorene Ellis, Pouf! is described as a witty and uplifting exploration of marriage, independence, sisterhood and finding joy in life.
"It's a light-hearted piece that (captures the essence) of the 1950s," said Glorene Ellis.
"This is put together by volunteers — everyone from the actors ... to those who have designed and built the set. It's a group that comes together that loves theatre and wants to share it with the community. It's great to be a part of that."
Plenty of work has gone into capture the feel of the 1950s in this play, Ellis noted.
"Our set designer, Derek Olinek, has created an exquisite piece. When you add the music and the lights, it comes alive. It's a small stage so you have to find the right look — we've had people looking for (vintage) items and have received donations. I think we've captured (the era) well," she said.
Ellis said she's excited for people to see the play.
"CAT has a group of people that read plays. They choose the season almost a year in advance. Then they look for directors. I was one of the people they asked, I read the play and I said to myself, 'I would love to do this,'" she said.
Tickets are available on CAT’s website www.centralalbertatheatre.ca or through the CAT box office at 403-967-1769.
CAT's next show is Opal's Million Dollar Duck, written by John Patrick, which will run from March 7-16.
