Charter bus fire strands passengers in Ponoka

Police responded to a bus fire on Hwy 2 about 16 km north of Ponoka on Wednesday morning. At about 10:45 a.m. it was reported that a northbound charter bus had suffered a blown tire which overheated and burst into flame near the Meniak Road exit.

At about 10:45 a.m. it was reported that a northbound charter bus had suffered a blown tire which overheated and burst into flame near the Meniak Road exit.

The bus driver attempted to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful and the 20 passengers on board were forced to evacuate with help of two off-duty Rocky View County firefighters who stopped to offer assistance.

No injuries were reported.

The Town of Ponoka and Ponoka Victim Services are providing assistance and accommodations for the stranded passengers until a replacement bus arrives.
