Committee drawn to fridge magnet

A fridge magnet giving phone numbers for various crime prevention agencies is being pondered by a new city committee.

A fridge magnet giving phone numbers for various crime prevention agencies is being pondered by a new city committee.

Chairwoman TerryLee Ropchan of the crime prevention advisory committee suggested the magnet as a quick one-stop source for policing and crime prevention resources.

She showed a draft version, which contained contact information for various organizations like Neighbourhood Watch of which she is a part of. The rest of the committee was encouraged to review the proposal and offer their suggestions.

“This really answers to who should I call,” said Red Deer city RCMP Supt. Brian Simpson on Tuesday.

Committee members were also asked to give their views on the direction of the committee and crime prevention.

David Radcliffe recently reviewed the Red Deer Crime Prevention and Policing Strategy completed in December 2004. He said the strategy should be promoted to the community more because it shows what the RCMP has done and will do in the future.

Garnet Ward, a former Mountie, said he would like to see more informal interaction between officers and members of the public, including sitting down with residents at coffee shops instead of with each other.

Ropchan supports the city creating block party permits.
