Construction is on track for the City of Red Deer’s $21.3-million parkade.

Project manager Darin Sceviour said that a contract is now being finalized with a private company to provide a high-end coffee kiosk in the 400-stall structure, which is to be completed early in June.

Sceviour cannot release the coffee company’s name until contract details are completed.

Plans are in place to move the city’s downtown transit terminal back to the ground level of the parkade once the building is ready for use.

However, an exact date for the move is not yet known, he said.

Once the transit terminal has been moved, the temporary site on 48th Street will be returned to its former state with access to 47th Avenue to be closed off.

The three-story parkade is being made from pre-cast concrete, set over foundations laid when the transit terminal was first built.

The parkade features two elevators with two green roofs over the top floor. Vegetation on the curved roofs, which are not accessible to the public, will trap rainwater and generate oxygen, a concept that is growing in popularity among urban designers, said Sceviour.

The parkade’s design includes provisions for future construction of skywalks leading to a new civic centre, to be build on the site of the existing RCMP detachment.

The city is in the midst of replacing the building with a new detachment, located on Gaetz Avenue, west of the downtown fire hall.
