Work will begin on the old 55th Street underpass, south of the CPR Pedestrian Bridge, on August 14 in support of the city's bridge rehabilitation project.
The City of Red Deer said the underpass is being removed to accommodate future construction access and pathway alignments. Demolition will begin this week and is expected to be completed by Sept. 6, depending on the weather.
Work will include removing the existing underpass bridge structure, installation of storm infrastructure, site grading and temporary pathway construction.
The CPR Pedestrian bridge will remain open, but access to the bridge from 55th Street will be closed. Pedestrians will be detoured to Gaetz Avenue. Motorists may also experience delays on 55th Street between Gaetz Avenue and 54th Avenue.
Nearby businesses and residents can expect elevated noise levels during demolition. Work will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., in accordance with the city’s noise bylaw.
The city thanks Red Deerians for their patience and co-operation.
