A 24-year-old Calgary man was sentenced to an 18-month jail term, with the bulk of it to be served in the community, after pleading guilty on Friday to trafficking in crack cocaine.

Mngden David Akoy has spent six months in custody awaiting trial. The remand time was applied to the sentence.

He pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and breaching conditions of a prior court order.

The remaining 12 months, including three months of house arrest, will be served in the community.

Akoy was to have a trial in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench but changed his plea before Justice John Gill.

Federal Crown prosecutor Dave Inglis said Akoy was arrested by Red Deer RCMP on Nov. 19 when an officer spotted him driving a vehicle. The officer had dealt with Akoy a week earlier and knew the accused was a suspended driver.

Akoy was also under a court order not to be in contact with the passenger in his vehicle.

When police conducted a person and vehicle search, they found 11 grams of crack cocaine wrapped in 16 individual bags. The drugs were likely worth an estimated $1,000 to $1,200 on the street.

Inglis said the amount of drugs and the packing were enough to warrant a trafficking charge.
