A former Red Deer city councillor wants his old job back. Jeffrey Dawson, 43, had served four consecutive terms on council before deciding to run against Mayor Morris Flewwelling in the 2007 municipal election.

Dawson has decided that he will run for a spot on council during the 2010 election, set for Monday, Oct. 18.

Red Deer needs to take a stronger lead both provincially and nationally through the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Dawson said in announcing his decision during the Red Deer Rotary Club’s regular meeting on Monday.

“This focused effort will help position Red Deer’s needs on the provincial and national level,” Dawson said in a prepared statement issued in advance of his announcement.

The next three to nine years will be crucial in a city that has, over the past one hundred years, evolved from a small town to become the third largest city in the province, he said.

Dawson cited a gift for numbers as being instrumental in his ability during his previous years on council to help form policies that helped manage growth in police, fire and ambulance services.
