Dog involved in vicious attack put down

A dog responsible for a vicious attack on a woman on the Sunchild Reserve has been put down by its owner.

The St. Bernard attacked Bernice Redcalf on Feb. 15 when she was visiting someone’s isolated home on the reserve north of Rocky Mountain House.

The senior was reportedly mauled when she got out of her vehicle. She was badly bitten on the leg and arm as she tried to fend off the large dog.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP Const. Dan Davis said the woman was taken to hospital but has since been released. “I believe she’s home now.”

Police approached the owner of the dog and told him they were taking steps to get permission to put the dog down. But before that happened, the owner arranged to have the dog put down himself.

“He understood the severity of it and ultimately understood that the dog had to be put down,” said Davis. “He was co-operative with that.”

No charges have been laid against the owner.
