Ex-teacher facing more charges

A former teacher and businessman faces more sexual assault charges dating back 40 years.

Warren Fertig, 70, of Red Deer, has now been charged with two counts of indecent assault on a female, RCMP said Friday.

Cpl. Kathe Deheer of city RCMP said as a result of media coverage, another woman who was a former student came forward to lodge a complaint.

The complainant said she was a 15-year-old student at River Glen School in 1971 when the alleged incidents took place.

Fertig returns to Red Deer provincial court on Dec. 13 to face the new charges as well as rape, sexual intercourse with a female under of the age of 14 and sexual intercourse with a female between the ages of 14 and 16 in the 1970s. The charges were worded that way in the Criminal Code at the time of the alleged offences.

Police said earlier this fall that in May 2010, they started an investigation after receiving a complaint.

It is alleged that Fertig, who was a teacher at River Glen School at the time of the alleged crimes, had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student between 1975 and 1977. The female student was 12 when the relationship allegedly started and 15 when it ended.

Fertig was released on $50,000 cash bail.

River Glen is located in Red Deer and is part of the Chinook’s Edge School Division.
