Snow blanketed Red Deer on Thursday morning and more is expected over the weekend.

Much of Central Alberta will remain under until mid-week as temperatures continue to sit near minus-40.

Sunday night into Monday morning in Red Deer, Environment Canada said frostbite can set in in minutes, with a low of minus 33, including a wind chill of minus 36 this evening and minus 44 overnight. Temperatures are expected to ease later in the week.

Due to the severe weather conditions, all school bus routes within Clearview Public Schools will be cancelled Feb. 3.

Schools will remain open. Please use your discretion when determining your family's travel safety.

Environment Canada says risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness, and colour changes in fingers and toes.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind-resistant.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
