A fire has left two people homeless in Sundre but the outcome could have been a lot worse, the fire chief said.

The Sundre Fire Department was called out to a blaze at a home on Wednesday night just after 7:30 p.m.

When firefighters arrived on scene — two km south of Sundre off of Hwy 760 — flames were coming through the roof of the home.

“We were able to get a couple tack teams in there quickly and we hit the fire pretty good,” said Marty Butts, Sundre fire chief.

“We managed to save the majority of the residence but there is quite a bit of damage, over $200,000 worth,” Butts said on Friday. Fire investigators were still on scene determining the cause of the blaze on Friday.

Butts said the home suffered a lot of water damage but the couple was able to remove some valuables.

“It is unfortunate and sad when you see people lose their belongings but we are pretty happy on the outcome of this one. It could have been a lot worse, with nothing to salvage,” he said.

The Olds Fire Department and the Cremona Fire department were called for mutual aid and responded to the fire.

A volunteer team from the local Canadian Red Cross provided the two individuals with shelter for 72 hours, as well as emergency clothing, hygiene kits and blankets.

The Red Cross Personal Disaster Assistance Team, which refers temporary homeless individuals to organizations that assist with long-term needs, aided the couple on Thursday morning.
