Fossil dig

Craig Scott, the Royal Tyrell Museum curator of fossil mammals, examines rock for fossils as research assistant Shane Ziemmer breaks up more to do the same east of the city Wednesday. The two men are after remnants of hedgehog- and shrew-like mammals that lived about 59 million years ago during the Palaeocene age. The research will help determine Earth’s succession of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago.
