The closure of Gaetz Avenue Bridge to remove tree debris that has collected on the concrete piers below has been tentatively rescheduled for July 21.
In order to remove the debris, the southbound bridge over the Red Deer River will be closed to traffic at 6 a.m. on July 21 until July 22. Traffic will be diverted to the Taylor Drive bridge.
The debris poses a potentially serious hazard. In order to safely and effectively remove the build-up of material, the bridge needs to be closed while crews work.
Red Deer Public Works Department engineer Dena Davies said the closure, which was originally planned for this week, was postponed to ensure businesses directly south of the bridge will still be accessible during the cleanup.
ATCO Gas construction has closed down 55th Street, so the bridge closure has been postponed until that roadway reopens.
Boaters and recreational watercraft users are advised to avoid the area immediately upstream of the Gaetz Avenue Bridge.
If travel on the river is necessary, keep to the south side of the river, watch for signage and stay clear of the concrete piers when approaching the Gaetz Avenue Bridge.
