A former River Glen School teacher facing sexual assault charges dating back to the 1970s has had a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 6.

Warren Fertig, 70, of Red Deer, has been charged in connection with the inappropriate sexual relationships he is alleged to have had with two female students almost 40 years ago.

According to police, the first complaint was received in May 2010, and Fertig was eventually charged with rape, sexual intercourse with a female under the age of 14 and sexual intercourse with a female between the ages of 14 and 16. The female student was 12 when the relationship allegedly started and 15 when it ended. The wording of the charges reflects how they were written in the Criminal Code at the time of the alleged offences.

In response to the media coverage of the first charges, a second former student came forward to lodge a complaint. She was 15 years old and attending River Glen School in 1971 when the incident allegedly occurred. Fertig was then charged with two counts of indecent assault on a female.

Both sets of charges will be heard back in Red Deer provincial court.

River Glen is located in Red Deer and is part of the Chinook’s Edge School Division.
