Big bike for hearts
A 30-seat bicycle will turn heads for a good cause on Tuesday. Heart & Stroke Foundation will host its Big Bike event, starting at 4 p.m. Bike participants will leave from McKenzie Trails picnic shelter and then head down to the Kerry Wood Nature Centre before looping back around. Catholic Social Services has a team that will ride the big bike this year. Last year, more than 5,000 people from across 35 communities in Alberta raised $889,000 for heart and stroke research. The goal this year in the Red Deer and Central region is $70,000.
Wrapper recycling
St. Elizabeth Seton School is the first school in Alberta to collect plastic cookie wrappers so TerraCycle can recycle them into new products. The elementary school students collected 277 wrappers and was credited two cents per wrapper for a total of $5.54. More than 750 schools in Canada collected and send TerraCycle their used drink pouches or cookie wrappers so the waste doesn’t end up in landfills. Kraft Food provides schools with free shipping for recycling. Schools can keep the money they earn or donate it to the charity of their choice. For more information go to www.terracycle.ca
Walk raises $28,000
More than $28,000 raised in donations will go towards Alzheimer Society programs and research following a June fundraiser. The Investors Group Memory Walk was held on June 19 in Red Deer. People can still bring the fundraising total higher for this event by giving donations until March 2011. Participants can also do a virtual walk and raise pledges as per normal.
