Innisfail RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs are investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Hwy 2 late Thursday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old man — Cary Dean Asplund of Calgary.

The Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit responded to the accident on Hwy 2’s southbound lanes, about five km north of Olds, at around 3:45 p.m.

Investigators have yet to determine what caused the car, travelling southbound in the right lane, to lose control, go off the road into a grass ditch and roll several times before coming to rest on its wheels.

The driver — a 20-year-old male from Calgary — and three male passengers were extracted from the vehicle by Olds Fire and Emergency Services using the Jaws of Life. Later, Asplund was pronounced dead at Olds Hospital.

A second passenger, an 18-year-old male from Vancouver, B.C., was also taken to hospital, treated and released

The driver and remaining passenger, a 20-year-old male from Victoria, B.C., received minor injuries.

Police said it appeared that all of the passengers were wearing their seatbelts; and alcohol, road conditions, and speed do not appear to be factors.

Police are seeking the occupants of a blue or black Dodge Caravan minivan that may have been involved in the collision.

Anyone with information concerning the accident is asked to contact Innisfail RCMP at 403-227-3342 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
