Janice Wing has been appointed chair of the Red Deer College Board of Governors.

Wing is the chief executive officer of the Red Deer and District Community Foundation and she is a past vice-chair of the board at RDC.

“I’m just thrilled,” said Wing, on Monday.

“It’s going to be exciting. I have big shoes to fill for sure because Herb Der was a great chair, but I’m excited for it and I think I’m up for the challenge.”

Wing, 50, was appointed by the Alberta advanced education minister to the position of chair, where she will serve until Dec. 2012. Herb Der retired recently after serving two terms.

“We have a new president (Joel Ward) at the college so there are going to be lots of things that continue to move forward because the college is a very forward-thinking organization,” Wing said.

“It’s a well-oiled machine in lots of ways, so just ensuring from a governance perspective that we continue doing our work in that regard and keeping our eye on the future is going to be the big piece for us.”

Wing has been a member of the Transatlantic Community Foundation Network since 2002, is a member of the governance and nominating committee at Westerner Park and a member of the Community Services Panel in Innisfail, where she lives with her husband of 29 years Al Wing.

Wing has three grown up children Shauna, Kent and Tracie. She has a strong connection with the college, with her husband and two of her children being alumni of the institution.

In 2009, she was awarded the Making a Difference for Women Award by Soroptimist International of Central Alberta, during the group’s celebration of International Women’s Day.
