Gateway Christian School’s 2025 valedictorian says the relationships and connections he's built throughout school has "made a big difference" in his life.

On Monday, June 13, Red Deer Public Schools announced that Jett Unrau has been named the school's valedictorian.

“My experience at Gateway was really great because I got to see the same teachers all the way from Kindergarten to Grade 12,” said Unrau.

Being a K-12 school, Gateway aims to create a strong sense of community and connection, with long-standing traditions like the Buddies Program, where older students pair up with younger grades for fun and mentorship. Unrau said he was especially grateful this year for the program as Grade 12 students were paired with the kindergarten classes.

“There’s just a sense of comfort when you’re at school with the same people for so many years,” he said.

“One of my good friends has been here since kindergarten too, and his mom has been the school secretary for a long time. You get to know people really well.

“The teachers are amazing. There are lots of pressures in high school that can seem like they continue mounting on — but it’s temporary and at the end, if you’ve put the effort in, you can be satisfied with the outcome. Always trying to do your best and always trying to get better.”

Unrau plans to pursue engineering after high school.

Gateway’s graduation ceremony will take place on June 26, where Unrau will have an opportunity to address his fellow classmates. He said he wants to focus his speech on his outlook on the future.

“It’s about what high school has been like and what stepping into the world will be — limitless and lots of opportunities,” he said.

Geannette Lehman, Gateway Christian School principal, said Unrau is a dedicated and hardworking student who consistently strives for excellence.

“His strong faith, integrity, and compassion are evident not only in his academic efforts but also in the way he treats others — with genuine kindness and respect,” Lehman said.

“Jett’s willingness to support his peers with patience and encouragement speaks to his collaborative nature and deeply held values. He is admired by both staff and classmates, and I am confident he will carry this same faith-driven commitment into his future pursuits. We wish him all the best.”
