Light projection ads not permitted in city

The City of Red Deer has reiterated its ban on light projections as a form of advertising.

The City of Red Deer has reiterated its ban on light projections as a form of advertising.

Red Deer businessman Robert Bonin raised concerns this week about the practice when he saw a giant high-definition slide show projected from a vehicle at night on Sept. 3 and 11 by a non-profit organization.

“That type of portable or temporary signage is not permitted or discretionary. You can’t get a permit to do it,” said Vicki Swainson, deputy development officer.

Organizers of Red Deer Cares hired an Edmonton media company to project three-minute slide shows onto the sides of buildings six times to increase awareness of homelessness in the city for its Red Deer Cares campaign.

The short campaign is now over.

No fine was levied against Red Deer Cares.

Red Deer Cares project co-ordinator Kristine Bugayong said she did not seek a permit from the city since it was a temporary projection and apologized for the confusion.

“We have good intentions and the community understands that very well,” Bugayong said.

Red Deer Cares also apologized after the media company failed to get approval from some building owners.

Red Deer Cares is sponsored by Red Deer and District Foundation, Central Alberta Addictions Consortium and other community partner social organizations, including the City of Red Deer.
