Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School will be closed on Friday to allow students and staff to attend a memorial for a teacher who died earlier this week.

The district will also arrange transportation to the service in Calgary.

Blair Murray, 53, died on Monday at his home in Calgary. He was away for school for about a week after suffering a heart attack. Murray had residences in both Red Deer and Calgary.

Murray was into his third year at Lindsay Thurber, where he was in charge of the school’s work experience program and off-campus education programs. He was also a co-coach for senior badminton and head coach for bantam football.

Principal Jim Clevette said Murray will be remembered as a warm, open and caring person.

“He was friends with everybody,” said Clevette. “He was good to students. Good to staff. He would give you the shirt off his back if he could. He will be missed.”

Counselling has been provided to students and staff.

The memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Eastside Memorial Chapel on 5388 Memorial Drive N.E. in Calgary.
