Loaves and Fishes hopes to reopen its doors no later than month’s end, once renovations to its kitchen and building are done.

“We’d like to open again by Aug. 31, if not sooner,” said administrator Melinda Lantz, who runs the north end soup kitchen with her husband Steve, who is the Loaves and Fishes Benevolent Society executive director.

The building at 6002 54th Ave. has been closed about a month as it undergoes extensive renovations. They include new flooring, new plumbing, some new electrical lines, painting, a new kitchen island, new kitchen storage racks, re-stuccoing the exterior and remodelling of the organizations four offices.

Work is also underway at Genesis House, the residence Loaves and Fishes operates for four men and a house leader.

It’s getting a new roof, flooring, kitchen cabinetry, bathrooms, remodelled bedrooms, exterior doors and landscaping.

All the work is being done through a $265,000 provincial grant.
