A man who drove backward in an attempt to elude RCMP during a drug bust Monday will make his first court appearance Friday.

Const. Chris Kosack of city RCMP said Wednesday the police observed a man in a small, compact car acting suspiciously in North Red Deer about 11 p.m.

“It appeared the driver was conducting drug transactions.” Kosack said.

When police attempted to stop the car, it fled in an erratic manner, attempting to evade police by driving backwards down a number of alleys and on various city streets.

A short time later, the driver of the car complied and stopped for police. The two occupants found in the vehicle were arrested without further incident.

Kosack said police located and seized a quantity of cocaine and drug trafficking paraphernalia and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Cody MacKenzie, 27, of Red Deer was charged with single counts of trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of the proceeds of crime, dangerous driving and flight from police.

He was remanded into custody.

The vehicle passenger was later released without charges.
