Red Deer RCMP have laid a series of charges against a 38-year-old Red Deer man after seizing weapons and drugs from a rural property outside of Red Deer.

Jason Sagal has been charged with three counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon, three counts of careless use of a firearm, assault, uttering threats, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

He is to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Friday.

The charges came after a search warrant on his home led to the recovery of numerous weapons and a stash of marijuana.

Police say they were first alerted to an incident involving the man’s girlfriend on Sunday at about 1:30 p.m.

The 26-year-old woman living in West Park in Red Deer phoned RCMP with a complaint of uttering threats. She alleged that her boyfriend was threatening her.

The woman told police that the suspect had access to weapons and she feared for her safety. Investigation revealed the suspect was prohibited from possessing weapons.

Members of the Red Deer City RCMP’s General Investigation Section found the suspect driving in Red Deer and arrested him on Tuesday.

Police then executed a judicially authorized search warrant, with the assistance of the RCMP Red Deer Emergency Response Team, on a rural property belonging to the suspect. RCMP located and seized three rifles; three pellet guns; two crossbows; one bow; a quantity of edged weapons; a quantity of ammunition; and a large quantity of marijuana.

RCMP spokesman Const. Chris Kozak said a large amount of marijuana, about 7.65 kg worth, was in full view when police arrived.
