An unidentified man has died after crashing a motorcycle while trying to flee police in Red Deer late Sunday night.

Const. Shaun Marchand said Red Deer City RCMP were called at 10 p.m. to investigate reports of an impaired motorcycle rider at 32nd Street and Gaetz Avenue.

The bike was stopped at a red light, preparing to turn north from the eastbound lane. The officer responding said the rider caused the bike’s rear tire to smoke before turning north onto Gaetz, said Marchand.

Police say the suspect tried to flee after the officer signalled him to pull over, but lost control in the 3800 block of Gaetz Ave. and crashed into the median.

Police say the officer deactivated his emergency lights and siren when the motorcycle sped off.

Fire-medics took him to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, where he was pronounced dead. His name, age and place of residence are being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Police say that the motorcycle was reported stolen on July 26, was displaying a licence plate that belonged on another vehicle and the rider was carrying a wallet and identification that had been stolen from another vehicle in Red Deer on Thursday.

Anyone with information that may assist in their investigation is asked to call Red Deer City RCMP at 403-343-5575. To remain anonymous, submit information online to www.tipsubmit.com or call Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
