The minivan driver who struck an ambulance head-on Monday afternoon near Rocky Mountain House has died.

The male driver, 48, of Calgary was taken by air ambulance to an Edmonton hospital. His name is not being released at the request of family.

The collision occurred at about 2 p.m., about 10 km southeast of Rocky Mountain House on Hwy 22.

The ambulance was carrying a Rocky RCMP officer who was being taken to hospital as a precaution after contact with toxic chemicals in a hidden drug lab. The lab had been discovered in Alhambra mobile home as the owner was preparing to move it.

The ambulance driver, 29, of Rocky Mountain House, was taken by air ambulance with critical injuries to a Calgary hospital. He is undergoing treatment in hospital.

The officer, in his late 20s, sustained minor injuries, and has been released from Rocky Mountain hospital.

A paramedic and an EMS student, who were also in the rear of the ambulance attending to the officer, were not hurt.

RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb said the investigation is continuing.
